Will PCI Express 3.0 x16 work with PCIe 2.0 x16?

I am using a GIGABYTE GV-N660OC-2GD with a MSI 970A-G43, a PCIe 3.0 card with a PCIe 2.0 slot, and it appears that this doesn't work. Constant BSOD whenever I play games (Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed 4), especially when there are lots of effects going on. Got an error box that said "The instruction at xxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxx. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/o error status of XXXXXXXX. I'm guessing the PCIe 2.0 interface is not fast enough to handle the card.

gotta be a different problem. easiest thing to do is check the control panel/sound and make sure it points to whatever it is you're using for sound ( on board? )........... if it is make sure the HDMI sound isn't selected or even disable it.....permanently.

list all hardware and monitor res............ for further assistance............start a new thread.
