Could just be a bad adapter.

Yeah, I'd check on that. Just get a new cable and try it out :p

so for all of you out there it seems that vga is a analog signal and dvi-d is digital therefore it will not work you cannot send an analog signal to a digital input . or at least this is what i have gathered in this journey. I tried a hand ful of cords so it cant be the cord. if any body out there has any opinion on this im all ears.

VGA and DVI-D are not compatible.

VGA is analog.
DVI-D is digital only. They are not compatible, apart from buying a very expensive powered converter that transforms analog to digital.

Details
VGA & DVI-A = analog only
DVI-D = digital only
DVI-I = analog and digital combination (but the source and destination must be the same -- aka, the source and destination must both be digital or both be analog)

You probably got a VGA to DVI-I converter... which won't work on your digital only tv, for the above reason.

How did I miss your reply? Oh well, sorry about that. I thought you had just posted it, but seems it was a rather old post.
Anyways, an alternative would be if your TV has a VGA plug, although that might result in significant quality loss... or a new, cheap video card (unless you can't add cards to your computer).

... oh wait, it seems a powered converter is not quite as expensive as I had thought ... I make no claims on the quality of these though, so be warned. :)

My guess is that the USB to HDMI will be better quality since it's all digital, but make sure you get one that supports 1080p resolution (not all do it seems).
