Both lists are just a snapshot of what is on the market over 99% of all DDR3 will work. Neither gigabyte or gskill have the resources to check all the available respective products on the market for compatibility. I personally never use the QVL lists for that reason and have never run into incompatible ram.

I never go by them either, and have never had an issue, but when recommending purchases to others I tend to go by the list so they can't use it against me if it doesn't work for some reason.
