R9 280X vs 7970 GHz Edition

Good Afternoon,

I am currently looking to upgrade my GPU. However i am torn between 2. That of the Asus R9 280X and the ASUS Radeon 7970 GHz Edition.

R9 280X - http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RADEON-280X-PCIE-CTLR/dp/B00FT2KSVK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382984897&sr=8-1&keywords=ASUS+MATRIX-R9280X-P-3GD5+Radeon+R9+280X+3GB+384-bit+GDDR5

7970 GHz - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121671

Despite the obvious monetary differences, which one would i be better off purchasing? I am also open to alternates if they are <=~ $410(plus shipping) and you have a convincing argument.

At a glance, it looks like they have essentially the same features, with a few port differences, but can work around that. 384bit interface, 3Gb buffer mem, 1600MHz mem clock.

Would i notice any difference between the two?

Thank you in advance for your input!

From what I've read the 280x is essentially a 7970 GE. In fact you can use a 280x in crossfire with a 7970. So basically at this point the 280x is the way to go since you will find them slightly cheaper.
  2. The 280x is a ghz 7970 (it's just a re-brand). Go with the cheaper one.
