R9 290X vs R9 280x VS GTX770 for 1080p gaming?

So I currently have a Gigabyte GTX 770 4gb that I bought 2 weeks ago on my first build of a computer. Its great, runs quiet and gets the job done.

Little did I know that AMDs R9 series was just around the corner with R9 280x rivaling the GTX 770 in performance, and beating it price-wise.

I took it a step further and lucked out on an order of an XFX R9 290X from Amazon ($549 deal.) I am concerned about the review of it being LOUD (Though im not sure how well my Fractal Design Define R4 would subdue the sound... it does a good job with the GTX770 at the moment)

Should I return my GTX 770 and get an R9 280x? Or is keeping the R9 290X order too overkill for 1080p gaming? I wont get into 4K gaming until prices for monitors go wayyyy down.

right now, i have an HD7950 overclocked to 7970 performance (or R9 280x to use the new nomenclature). it runs games great at 1080p, most at or above 60fps. however, the next generation of games i suspect will begin to push these cards at 1080p. also, considering the availability of the 290, i would keep it. its future proof and, well, its the fastest card in most cases. enjoy ;)

I would not return a 770 for a 280x, the performance differences are minimal. 290x would be overkill for 1080p gaming for sure. It is loud and hot from what I hear, so a quiet case with more limited airflow would probably not be the most ideal situation for a card like that. Stick with the 770, it is a great card, that will run anything out there.

Thanks for the responses -

the 780 does look intriguing, but would you expect the prices to dip lower down to the $450 range?

I am going to try out the R9 290X when it comes in and see how it fares. I could be spoiled by the uber-silence of my GTX770 lol

They just dropped the prices of the 770 to $330 so if you bought yours before the price drop I would return it and either buy the 770 back for cheaper or wait for the 290x to get new cooling designs from the various manufacturers. I would pick up the 280x or a 7970 if it saves you some money, otherwise they are close enough in performance for it to not really matter.
