Due to AMD drivers still not fixing the frame pacing issue for resolutions over 2560x1600 I recommend you go with the 780s. With the recent price drop they are a good buy.

Well, drivers on the R9 290X are very bad. That means the card can get some good improvements.

if you do not have a water-cool system, the open fans like the 780 Lighting will have problem in disseminate the heat when SLI,but the turbo fan will not have this problem because it get the heat out the case directly. That is why nvidia and amd always has a referance card with turbo.

290x but wait for the aftermarket coolers n new driver updates. The 290x has beaten the 780. However if you cant wait. 780 is the way.

SLI works properly with good scaling most of the time in officially supported games. Crossfire has many problems still, although is getting better, it is still not as refined as sli. For dual cards still better to go nvidia.

Overclocking performance is random. You should always buy a card based on stock performance. ie. the 780 has a lot of room for overclocking, the 290x doesn't... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpD_r53qxJc

I think the 290X runs quite hot , having two of them in crossfire will make the matter worse, you are better off with the 780 SLI as it will run cooler and quieter , running two cards that hit 95 degress is a bit of a concern.

Not to mention the drivers, crossfire support..780s in sli would be a wicked option as well and far better imo
