I did some research before buying this card off of NewEgg, and even created a post here to make sure that my 525w PSU could handle this card, but lo and behold the day it arrives the box cites a minimum of 550 watts. Here's the exact model I bought: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...

My PSU is manufactured by Dell, as it is part of a pre-built Alienware Aurora R2, and is certified 80plus silver. My biggest concern is that the design of the case has the power supply cables practically glued underneath immovable parts of the structure, so upgrading would be next to impossible. Am I still safe to use this card or should I return it for a less power-hungry model?

Take a look at the label on the PSU, will want min of 23 Amps on the 12V rail and continuous 500+ power, being a Dell it may be sub 20AMP and 4xx continuous watts

Only 18 Amps, couldn't find continuous anywhere but max on the 12V is 500.

Think I'd want something a little better, went and checked, stock does call for 23amps on the 12 and 500 continuous, so I'd look for at least a 550 (I like a little extra), and check the specs, many are advertising peak watts and you want continuous

Like I said in the first post, upgrading the PSU would be a royal pain thanks to the design of the case. Would a GTX 660 (the other card I was considering before getting the 7870) run on my PSU?

660 think calls for 23Amp and 450 watts - you rather limited by the PSU that came with the rig, 18AMp is down in the 76xx , or the early GTX 220 area, sorry :(

Thanks for your help, I'll look into trying to wrestle a better PSU into this case then.
