Greetings,

I have a new bought PC, about a week old.

i 4770k
Asus Maximum VI Impact
16GB RAM
256GB SSD
No GPU ATM

Lian LI PC-Q25B case with
Scythe Kozuti for CPU fan,
Scythe Slip Stream for Top fan,
Default 140mm Front fan

I started getting BSODs yesterday ( WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR ) very often.

After a little bit of messing around I noticed it's the CPU temperatures.

At idling, the core temps are very low, about 30-35 C.
I decided to stress test to see what's happening.

Literally one second after I hit the Start button on Prime95 or HeavyLoad, temps jump to 60 and start rising. In most cases, I get a BSOD at less than 60 seconds.

Do you have any idea why this could be?
The fan seems to be working properly.

I ran 4 way Optimisation by Asus Suite III, which Overclocked my PC. To be honest it is also kind of when my problems started. But I did think of that and have since uninstalled the Suite and the problem was not fixed. Not sure about drivers, it's a clean installation of Windows 8 and updated to Windows 8.1

This is likely to be the issue. Did you reset to stock settings before you uninstalled it? If not, you will have to go into the BIOS and change it back or re-install the program to try.

Thanks,

this actually solved the issue with the BSODs.

However, the temp spikes and consequently very high temps during the stress tests didn't go. After about 4 minutes of stress testing the cores reached almost 100C ( case opened ).

Also, I read very different temps between RealTemp and SpeedFan. SpeedFan displays temps about 15C lower. However, under the Charts tab in SpeedFan, the temps match the ones of RealTemp.

Any ideas about that?

I'm not sure. It could be a programming issue in speedfan, but I really don't know. Personally I use Core Temp and it seems to work fine.

As for the high temps, how large are these spikes? Are you saying it would average 90 then spike to 100 or 70 then spike to 100?

This could be caused by inaccurate sensors in the CPU or it still isn't 100% stable, therefore throttling most of the time and running at max every now and again. Another less likely situation is the CPU cooler is not seated correctly. This usually results in consistently high temps though.

One way you could try to reduce it is undervolting. Try to lower the CPU voltage as low as you can while keeping it stable. This should keep the temps down a little.

The other option you can try if undervolting does not work is reseating the CPU cooler.

You also might find that the cooling system works better with a closed case. Some do and some don't.

I think PJcat might be right check the seating of the cpu fan make sure its down all the way. I had that issue when I first installed my i7, make sure the Bios is updated and go back into it check the temp monitor as well. It might be a false positive mine was until I flashed bios and reset cmos

PJCat, after installing CoreTemp I can see that my CPU averages 50C while idle. Now, I could try to run a browser, or perhaps open MS Word, and it would spike to 60-65C for a second. When playing games, it averages 60C. Running IntelBurnTest makes it hit 100C within a couple of minutes.
