There about the same... My 7970(280X) is about 0.7-1.1 frames off a 770 pushed to it's limits. I have the ASUS DC2 7970 which is not hardware locked.
Check out the last three pages of benches and look to see how mine compared to a 770. The 770 has 7GHz memory which really offers the performance increase, other than being modified kepler, its a 680 on crack.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/393368-33-unigine-val...
And BTW, the 280X is only 0.5-1 frames better at stock(7970) than my 7970.

If I were you, I'd do what I did and take the HD 7970 path. It's the same card as the R9-280X but you get three free games with it. I got two cards so I got 6 games. I can't complain about that...lol

Personally I am in the same situation. The R9 280x runs great for games that are cpu heavy but games that are both cpu and gpu heavy such as bf3 it runs poor in comparison to the 770. So for you to purchase a card its all about your preferences such as: what games will you play? What graphics do you want out of these games? Personally I am a huge battlefield player and with the launch of bf4 I will be purchasing the 770 since it runs bf3 better than the R9 280x. If you will be running many different games I would recommend the R9 280x as it is better for most games but look at this chart to find the games you will play most and see which of the two cards runs better. Also there is a price difference between the cards so is the extra 4 frames worth $50-$100 to you? http://www.anandtech.com/show/7406/the-sapphire-r9-280x...

On BF4 the 770 barely has an edge over the r9 280x, At least in all the benchmarks i have seen which were from tech syndicate, and Linus Tech Tips. Also i think one game won't really make a difference if the r9 280x beats the 770 in most other games. All i'm trying to see is if the Asus Matrix r9 280x outdoes even the best 770's.

Yea i guess you're right. Those 3 games definitely make up for the $100 difference, and i suppose you're talking about the GHz edition right?

Hi,
I had the same problem. I have decided to go for Asus Matrix Platinm R9 280x. Yes it is more expensive that reference R9 280x card but you are paying for the quiter card with th better cooling.
I do not regret that I overspent on my GPU. It is really good card. I can play BF 4 at ultra at insanse fps's.
The card is made from premium components which give you lots of space for overclocking.
Get Matrix its really good. The performance wise it is alsmost touching GTX 780 benchmarks.

You made a good choice. But you get less performance than my 7970 though. We both have the same PCB but a different cover for the cooler and I have the "older" GPU. Check your FPS in BF4 by typing "Perf.Overlay Drawfps = 1"

Hi,

I checked the fps and they are pretty much the same for sp and mp. They max fps I had was 125 fps, the lowest 55 fps. I would say that the games on average runs at 65-72 fps. When there is a loads of the screen it can drop for a second to 44 fps but than jumps back to 65-7 and up. I run everything on Ultra. We will both see performance increase when they release mantle in dec.

Mantle = ???

Get that 280X Matrix or a HD 7970 with free games, many of them can easily do 1100Mhz :)

Yes like huilun02 said 7970 with free games is superb value or money, matrix r9 280x does not come with free games but this is high quality card, easy to overclosck with GPU Tweak.

The GTX 770 comes with three free games as well; Assassin's Creed 4, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. If it was me, I would go for the GTX 770 so you can take advantage of the unique technologies it offers: PhysX, Adaptive VSync, TXAA, FXAA, HBAO+, Shadowplay, forced Ambient Occlusion, etc. The best GTX 770's are going to be the usual suspects: MSI Gaming or Lightning, Asus DirectCU II OC, Gigabyte Windforce OC, or a wildcard, the Galaxy Hall of Fame (HOF).

Is the Matrix the same as the Platinum? And if you're right about that insane fps i will for sure go with the matrix.

Don't forget about the AMD Mantle! A lot of people are already saying that the R9 270X is gonna outperform even the GTX 780 (Almost) in battlefield 4 and games that supports mantle.
