I'm thinking in buying a new laptop, probably Lenovo, the one I saw is an i3-3110M G500 with 2GB RAM (DDR3 1600), and integrated video, I'm thinking in buying additional 4GB, I was told that nowadays most laptop comes with 2 RAM slots and you can put different RAM sizes into the slots, is it right? If I buy an additional 4GB of RAM (I'll have total of 6GB RAM, 2 GB original + 4GB bought separate), will this work? This additional 4GB will be shared by video as well?

Hi,

The additional memory upgrade will depend on the model. If the maximum memory is 8 GB, then you can add upto 4 GB + 4 GB maximum configuration. You can also mixes different sizes like you said. 2 GB + 4GB.

Some laptops do come as 1 slot (Non-upgradable, usually mentioned as OnBoard memory) and the other slot upgradable.

Above 4 GB of memory can be recognized only by a 64 Bit OS and so the memory will not be shared by video if you are on a 64 Bit, the whole memory system is addressed to Physical available.

But if you are on 32 bit, you'll always notice that some of the memory will be shared to the video.

Good luck!
