Hello all,

I'm after a Asus x79 Deluxe motherboard and need to pick memory but I don't know which to choose for best performance, duall or quad kit?

I want a total of 16 GB. would I be better of with a duall kit of 2 times 8GB or a quad kit with 4 times 4 GB?

Thanks in advance

From a performance perspective, in most apps, it won't make much difference - dual vs quad channel.

What I would avoid in the future (if faced with needs for more memory) at any time is combining two kits together - so factor that into whether you want to buy a X79 specific kit or not. Any memory kit is programmed with timings for a single kit only - so combining them can cause issues.

This thread caught my interest since it exposes one of my doubts about the quad-channel.

If I were to buy 2 kits of this RAM http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/vengeance-pro-series-memory/vengeance-pro-series-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr3-dram-1600mhz-c9-memory-kit-cmy16gx3m2a1600c9a.html from the store to make 32GB on a X79 plataform, does that mean it would lift problems?

Potentially yes, as both the SPD and XMP are programmed according to the density of a single kit. At worst two kits combined will not reach the rated timings of a signle kit and need manual adjustment. At best it can sometimes work, but you need to be able to tune memory settings to be confident.

I usually don't recommend users unversed in how memory works to embark on combining kits.

Thank you kindly for replying, you just helped me solve the biggest doubt I had about my new build. :)

I guess I'll go with a kit of Vengeance LP — 32GB Dual/Quad Channel DDR3 Memory (CML32GX3M4A1600C10) instead, if they're compatible with the Asus x79 motherboard that is. :)

If going 1600 at least get a CL9 set, 1600/9 is entry level 1600/10 is slower, for X79 I'd recommend a minimum of 1866/9 or better...and the difference performance wise between running dual or quad channel can be upwards of 10-20% (and whatever you do, especially on X79, buy a single set - don't even go the the 2 sets of 2 sticks of the same model to save that extra $5 - $10, it's not worth it ;)
