Building a new computer for my son and I'm seeking opinions on what is the best CPU / motherboard combo to fit my needs. Looking to spend in the $400 range but can go higher. My son games and I do video editing so looking for something to fit both our needs. Not stuck on a particular CPU, I have used INTEL and AMD in the past and have no complaints with either. Want something that gives me the most bang for my money and won't have to upgrade for a year or two

I would recommend one of these
AMD option:
AMD FX 8350
Gigabyte 990FXA UD5
And a Noctua NH-D14
OC it to 4.5GHz

The Intel Option:
Intel i5 4670K
ASUS Z87 A Motherboard
And an Enermax T40 Bk
And then you can get a decent OC out of that as well

Any suggestions on which I7 and motherboard? I have helped build one computer in the past and this will be my first stab at it on my own. My son is dying to build his own so this will be a father son project. So I'm a novice when it comes to the hardware

I agree on getting the Xeon over a locked i7 for a not overclocking rig. I would save the money and get the slightly slower 1240v3 over that one. If the IGP/Quick sync is something that might be used, the 1245 is an option as well. Better price/performance. That extra 100mhz isn't worth almost $70.

You don't even need to overclock now. You get a K model chip now. It would be a beast for a year or two, then when/if you need a performance boost, you will have a built in fail safe. Spending ~$20 now will keep your cpu relevant for a couple years longer.

Ok overclocking is the way to go, always looking to learn something new. So with that said what would be some suggestions? Appreciate the help.
