Would it be wise to upgrade from Win7 to Win8 via internet upgrade?

As the title says, I am planning on upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows Pro 8.1 64-bit, via internet.

Reasons for the upgrade? Well Windows 8.1 Pro for students has 60% discount so it wouldn't hurt me getting it plus I am looking for "good performance" for gaming (I've heard Battlefield 4 and some other games are optimized for Windows 8 - improved frames) and for design use (Photoshop - I am a graphic design student)

I've done some minimal research on the matter (even read FAQs about Win8) and I didn't find bad reviews about it so far, but I am still not convinced...at all.

My concern is that, considering that I haven't had the best experience cloning Win7 OS from HDD to SSD, the process could fail and leave me with nothing. I also ran the Windows 8 compatibility program and I understand that the apps that are compatible, must be re-installed again after the upgrade but there's one thing that Windows reported an "error" on and that is Secure Boot. Windows 8 compatibility program says that it can't transfer my Secure Boot because the current firmware that I have in my OS isn't compatible. I have no idea of what Secure Boot is or if is necessary for the upgrade.

I have 3 disks, C: with OS (SSD) E: with Backup (HDD) and G: with storage of photos, etc. (HDD). Will the Windows 8 upgrade transfer only and exclusively the files from disk C: or will it also transfer files from my other 2 HDDs? (I assume it won't... hence the suggested backup prior to upgrade).

In resume, my concerns are if the upgrade is safe to do, what risks are there if something happens to fail, what files are going to be transfered and what happens to those compatible apps.

Thanks in advance... !

If it serves of anything, here my PC specs:

  • ■ OS- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    ■ SSD- Samsung 840 250GB (OS)
    ■ HDDs - Hitachi 300GB (Backup) | Hitachi 2TB (Storage)
    ■ CPU- i7-4770k quad @3.50Ghz
    ■ GPU- GTX 770

Misc:

  • ■ 20mbps download/2mbps upload

When dealing with the OS only the drive that the operating system is on will really be affected. The data on your other drives should remain untouched. If you upgrade it should back up files on your current OS drive but you will have to reinstall programs.

I personally would not go to windows 8 from windows 7 though, it's not designed for desktop users and is pretty clunky in my opinion. Unless your willing to spend extra money on programs that essentially make windows 8 the same as windows 7 there isn't much benefit in it for you. The performance improvement for games will be minimal and probably not noticeable at all.

I'm sure there will be people that love windows 8 and say go for it but in my opinion any money spend upgrading from...
