Will this motherboard work with only one stick of ram or will it require 2 sticks: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P Socket AM3/AM3+ ATX Motherboard, AMD 970 Chipset, Supports FX/Phenom II/Athlon II Series CPUs, Dual Channel DDR3 2000(O.C.), PCI-E x16, SATA 6Gb/s RAID, USB 3.0, w/ Gigabit LAN and 7.1ch HD Audio. The ram I plan on using is Kingston HyperX Genesis - Memory - 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL9 - 1.65 V - unbuffered - non-ECC

Depending on your OS, you usually need at least 2GB, even if it's on one stick only. Your best bet is a kit of 2 or 4 sticks to run in dual channel.

Yes the board will work with 1 stick of ram although 2 sticks are recommended for dual channel operation to max performance.

Ok so if I am only able to purchase one right now it would run okay for a week or two until I was able to purchase a second stick?

Yeah, 2GB is your minimum. You're better off stretching now and buying a kit of 2 sticks, but if you really can't, make sure the second one you buy is identical, so they'll run in dual channel well.

There are some restrictions in using RAM. Both slots could use same or different RAM units. Dealers in RAM units could suggest the best combination which can be used as per the specific details about the system in use.

huh? sorry, but that was probably the most confusing sentence I've ever read. He was just asking how much RAM he could use for now...
