How much memory can a Dell Dimension E310 handle

I have heard that some have been able to put 4-8 GB of memory in older machines using newer forms of memory. My old Dell takes PC-2 6400. Is there any truth to this, and how much can my old machine really utilize?

  1. See here: http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Dell-memory/Dimension+%2F+Dimension+XPS/Dimension+E310-upgrades.html

Max memory is actually 2GB. Dell site says the same (confirm here, page 40):

    ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-3100_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

I have seen these machines work with 4GB (2x2GB) of memory (unofficial support). I would not try more than that.

The limiting factor here is the chipset (i915), and the processor (CeleronD). These are 32-bit parts, and they don't support more than 4gb.
