Hey guys, I have am old ps3 system, one that plays blue rays and dvds, and the disk drive took a crap on me awhile back. My friend has a newer Ps3 and apparently the graphics card is fried. I was wondering if it would be possible to swap disk drives and if there would be any compatibility issues. Thanks for you help!

Sounds like the laser failed. You may be able to transfer the good one from your friend's PS3, depending on the model.

Laser replacement is actually pretty simple, as long as you keep track of everything. I replaced the laser on my 60 GB PS3 about a year ago after I started having trouble getting it to recognize discs. I'd have to insert/eject the disc 3-4 times before it would recognize the disc.

Your best bet would be to find a donor PS3 from the same generation, if not the same exact model, in order to replace the drive. Also, the Blu-ray drive's controller board is locked to the motherboard, so that has to be transferred to the replacement drive (hopefully that's not the problem).

Just out of curiosity, what is the problem with the drive? Does it not read certain disc formats, or does it not spin/eject?

sorry about such a late response, It started out not reading blue rays, then went about a year or so, now it wont read anything, or even recognize that its there.
