So I bought Battlefield 4 on Origin yesterday. I've been downloading the game since last night and it's only at 48%. The speed varies from 60 KB/sec to 300 KB/sec. But when i pause and resume downloading, it starts at around 2 MB/sec then starts to drop down to 300 KB/sec in under a minute. I went to Speedtest and my download speed is 12.53 Mbps.

So I don't know if my ISP is throttling my download speed, (300 KB/sec seems a bit low) or if the Origin servers are just busy but it's kind of frustrating. Does anyone have any solution? How do I know for sure if my ISP is throttling Origin? I've also tried restarting my computer and reset my router, but nothing changes the speed. Thanks.

*also if this isn't the right place to post this, I apologize in advance :)

The origin servers are probably just getting the shit kicked out of them.

Sounds normal. It isn't your ISP. You can check by downloading something else not on Origin's network. All connections will "burst" on initial download and who knows what Origins is doing.... most likely something similar to seeding on P2P networks.

I doubt it is Origin, since I downloaded it last night averaging around 8 to 8.6 MBps (took about 45 mins)

More than likely it is your ISP. Especially if you are in a heavily populated area.

He can speed test his line just fine... it must be Origin

speedtest sends small tcp/ip packets. Origin file transfers use massive data streams.

Running a speedtest can tell you if you have an issue with the line, but it is not indicative of actual use.

I live in South Dakota. So not very populated. :)  This is why it's confusing, if other people aren't having an issue (most of i've talked to have been going at least 2 MB/sec) then how could it be the servers? Wouldn't everyone be downloading this slow? And let's say it is my ISP, isn't 60 - 200 KB/sec a bit slow for even that?

I've seen threads saying that Origins uses just a single connection to the download servers for the client and that connection to the download server is is determined by the location of the server providing your DNS. If that download server is limiting connection speeds, you could in theory get a better connection by tricking Origins into thinking you are more near an urban area which would likely have better bandwidth. I don't know how much truth there is in there but it doesn't sound far-fetched either.

That is all about what speedtest.net and what Origin is telling you. Speedtest.net is saying that your download speed is at 12.53 megabits (Mb/s) per second, whereas Origin is telling you that you are downloading at 2 megabytes (MB/s) per second. Remember that a bit is an eighth of a byte, so for every 8 bits it is one byte. In terms of Speedtest.net, if you are downloading at 2 megabytes per second off of Origin, you are really downloading at 16 megabits per second.

As for the shitty download speeeds off of Origin for battelfield 4, I am experiencing the same shit. I live over in New Zealand and to my knowledge there aren't any Origin servers close by. I am getting 250 kilobytes (KB/s) where since my internet speed gets 95 megabits (Mb/s) off of speedtest.net I should really be getting 11-12 megabytes (MB/s). It pisses me off haha. Just another reason why I prefer Steam over Origin, as whenever I do download through Steam it does hit about 12 megabytes. Just last week it took me 10 minutes to download a 6.6 GB game haha.

Anyway, good luck with your download and I'll see you on the battlefield :p

I was going through the same exact shit man. Didn't see speeds over 100 KB/sec for a full 24 hour period. Origin blows. I gave up and requested a refund on the digital game, then went and bought a physical game disk (so retro). The game installed fine, but now I've been waiting 2 hours for a goddamn 700 MB update... Origin is such a troll.

Same thing here. Speedtest.net shows 102Mbps but at Origin BF4 is downloading at 260 KBps at top (most of the time its downloading at 160KBps.

You guys should be airing this out on the EA forums. Not that I would expect anything to be done about it but.... Origins is the worst thing to happen to this franchise. I'm a total BF fanboy and have played religiously since BF:1942(possibly still my favorite).

After trying many fixes, here is my solution. Carry the PC to a friends house. 2 hours 15 minutes on his 2MB connection compared to 75 hours on my 10MB connection.
I'll admit it's not ideal, a work around that requires driving around.....

I was dloading at 2.45kb/s no joke
I found this fix not sure if it works for everyone but it worked for me.
Followed the simple instructions and was downloading at 1.03mb/s.
Hope it works for you guys

Exit Origin
Create a new empty document on your desktop
Enter the following in the file:
[connection]
EnvironmentName=production

[Feature]
CdnOverride=akamai

Save the file as EACore.ini
Now start Origin. Upon start you will be asked if you want to import the file you just created on your desktop. Press Yes. This will overwrite your old config-file.
Information The EACore.ini file is deleted from your desktop as soon as you import it.
If you ever want to leave R&D mode you need to go to the location where Origin is installed and delete the EACore.ini file found there.

It does work fairly well. Downloading now at a steady and consistent rate. I had to reinstall and this has sped the process along rather nicely. I was looking at 800+ hours . . but now it's just plodding away. Thanks!

I must be the only lucky guy then..
I have a 100mbit down (12,5MB), and 10mbit up (1,25MB) connection. On speedtest I usually get around 90-93 (11,5MB) down and 16-17 up (2MB).
Today I was downloading titan fall beta to try it out, and somehow I reached 73MB/s (584mbit). I was only able to print screen it when it was at 60 something.
It took me less than 10 minutes to download a 12,4GB game!
