This will be a great build for playing games at high settings. Do not expect max setting in new games, however.

For the same price, get an hd7950. It will allow you to play at Ultra settings.

I can't seem to find a 7950 within that price range.. nevertheless, is there a specific brand you'd recommend or would any variant do?

Any variant would do. It seems they have gone up a bit in price. A week ago, one could be had for $210.
