I Have an Asrock z77 Extreme 4-m mother board with a 3770k. I recently brought a r9 280x asus matrix card wich i have had to put in pcie3, because i have an enermax t40 cooler which almost covers pcie1. It says in the manual pci-e is x16 but on gpu-z it's only showing x8, any ideas?

ok here, the 2 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots will work as follows: (PCIE1/PCIE3: single at x16 (PCIE1) / x8 (PCIE3) or dual at x8/x8 mode)

so the PCIE3 will always work on X8, even if the the PCIE1 is empty.

but you do not need to worry at all, with the current cards, even a PCIe2 X8 will be more than enough. so you are totally safe.

Cheers mate I guess I won't worry then. I don't know why they say 2X x16 slots if only pcie1 will ever be x16 just seems silly.
