Is Haswell Rubbish?

Solution

"Another manufacturer claims that retail Haswell parts are proving too hot to handle, stating that even while running at stock speeds the chips reach higher temperatures than the pre-production engineering samples - by around 15 degrees Celsius, according to the unnamed company's tests - or even the retail models of Intel's last-generation Ivy Bridge chips."

Hurr?

Well, despite having one, I'd say "yes". You see, it is a great CPU, but performance-wise it's like only 6% better than Ivy Bridge, so kinda meh - if you already have Ivy - no point upgrading unless you upgrade the tier too (I3/I5/I7).

The only dramatic improvement is that it has a very low idle voltage, that's it. Maybe new instructions, which may be useful a year or two from now.

Oh really??? Tell me, how hot does haswell get at STOCK speed? Cuz as far as I know, they are MUCH cooler at stock than many other CPUs out there.

Overclocking heat is something that does not apply to everyone, so please specify if that is what you meant.

I can't speak for overclocking, but right now my desktop cpu (4670k) is idling in the low 20s, and even after playing some games it doesnt go so high. It doesnt seem to be worth it if you are upgrading from the previous generation, but if you are looking for a brand new computer than it can definitely be worth it, especially if you can find some sort of deal on them.
