Sounds like you've got an older version of linux. What is it supposed to be? Can you download a new one?

Most new versions use an ext4 format. They will also work on an ext2 though. What did Acer say it installed? Ubuntu? Red Hat? Other? You can download brand new versions to easily install if you want. They are free and it might be easier that fighting with a problem.

If you want you can download a copy of puppylinux http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppy... it's about 143mb. Burn it to a cd. Start your computer from it and open a terminal, it should appear on your desktop. Type in this command fsck.ext2 /dev/sda1 this will correct the file system errors.
