Urgent for work, it was my old work computer and need all the files on my old hard drive to put into an external storage device and then use that to put the files into a new computer or is there another easier way to get the files off my old hard drive.

Your way will work, there is another way, put the old HDD on new PC as a second HDD and pull the data from old to new HDD. This way you don't need an external drive.

As a precaution use the copy and paste method instead of the cut and paste method for copying files in case something goes wrong during the copying process.
