i am trying to install win 7 over win xp on the HD, when i get to the menu of partitions, it only shows 43gb avail, instead of the full 80 gb that it is, there are no other partitions showing, i cant format the drive either, any suggestions? win 7 seems to be installing, but is the HD damaged?

Hello... try deleting all partitons first and creating just 1 new one, with the full size of your 80gb, format it... Windows 7 will not reload over your previous XP partition/install.
