Hey guys,

Sry for the noob question, but can I use a HD 7870 2GB (or even a GTX650 TI Boost 2GB) with my Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz 2.0MB or will it bottleneck?

I have this MB: AMD MCP61M-M3 AM3 Box and I want a minimal update to play some games and I don't know a better choice to spend something around 300~400 bucks.

Thanks.

it will. how much? if you were to game on almost an exact replica of your system except change it to an phenom ii x4, the fps will double or even triple than what you'll get with a dual core athlon.

From what I read, I don't think that board will support that GPU, I don't think it has the right connectors. It's lacking PCI-E I think, which would throttle that GPU massively or it might not even be compatible.

I think you'd have to do a completely new system build honestly. Wait and see what the other guys here think, they're probably more knowledgeable on the subject than me.

If the GPU IS compatible then yes there would be a bottleneck but you would most likely see a performance boost. What's your current graphics card?

You could really use a new CPU, motherboard, and GPU at this point. Since you have an AM3 system, you already have ddr3 and that can be reused to save some $$ for now.

This is just slightly over your max budget, but would be a significant upgrade. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($59.99 @ Microcenter)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB Video Card ($189.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $409.97

Ok, so the smartest thing to do is to update the whole thing. I used the @logainofhades config. suggestion as base and I changed the GPU and MB to save some $$. What I've in mind now is:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core Processor ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire 100354OC-2L Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 ($174.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $353.96 (with -10$ cupom code).

Can I go with this build too?

If yes, I think I'll need a new PSU (I've a OCZ 500SXS), but not a new case, right? (I've a V3 Black Edition)

Thanks one more time!

The 7870 XT is superior and is worth the extra $10. It is a tahiti based one and nearly as fast as a 7950. The FX 6300 is a decent alternative to save some $$$, though.
