I googled for answers to this problem which I am assuming it is my video card and none seem to be working. I am running on a HD 4890. I know it is considered old for Windows 8 but I have been using it for a while with no problems using the legacy drivers. Since I've been getting this error I've cleaned it out of malware in safe mode and also reinstalled the drivers. The errors sometimes only occurs when i launch a game or I can't even get into windows. One difference I've noticed too my error is different than the other because it contains (atikmpag.sys) on it. Any suggestions or solutions? I really don't want to buy a new card because I don't have the money right now so maybe downgrade to Windows 7? Thanks for the help!

Solution
Just format and clean install OS, this is the only way left. If you have important data on that drive then try another system to pull out the data first then format it.
If somehow the GPU has gone faulty, then downgrading to WIN 7 will not help. So first test the GPU if its really faulty or not. Now do you have on-board graphics(VGA) ? If so then take out the GPU and connect the monitor to the VGA port, test with it for several hours or for days, see what happens.

If the problem persists then its not your GPU but something else, otherwise the GPU is culprit.

I just read that updating DirectX could solve the problem.

My old GPU which is really old, (Ati x1950 PRO) is shot and won't work at all, I tried updating DirectX and it says I am at the latest version already. Not sure what to try now, I read it is possibly the registry errors so maybe reinstall windows? Not sure.

the problem is with the Microsoft version of the driver (WDDM v1.1). I used my catalyst driver included with my graphic card it solved the problem. but you must somehow prevent windows from upgrading the original catalyst driver to the Microsoft version.

If the problem is with incompatibility then first go to your graphic drivers file and click properties then go to compatibility. After that click Reduce color to 8-bit(256) color and click Run in 640*480 screen resolution.Apply the setting and install the driver then restart...Maybe this will solve the problem...... .peace (y)
