I am buying a computer for gaming, it's an HP XW6600, its a workstation that has a Xeon. I read all about how Xeon's are better used on servers and 2 of them at the same time (this has 1 xeon i believe but has 2 slots). Since i am only paying 255$ for this, i dont see the problem. Also i am putting in a different gaming graphics card. I wont be playing the latest FPS Crysis or battlefield 4. Just looking to play games like minecraft, left 4 dead, grand theft auto 4, saints row 3,2 and maybe 4.

That workstation is old and it features Xeons from 2007, so don't expect magic, the processor is very dated and not powerful by current standards.

Knowing the exact model would be good, as that workstation comes with different Xeon options, but generally the desktop analogy would be Core2Quad.

It uses the e5440, i think its at least good value for the station, do you think it would handle the games though?

Yeah, it will be fine, by today's standards it's about half as powerful as a high-end I5, thus in modern terms it would be an entry level CPU, but in games you listed it should be okay as long as you don't go crazy settings spree

i5 2400 is near the upper tier of gaming CPU's. It is far better gaming CPU than any core 2 based chip. I actually still have mine in my file server. I had an X3210 @ 3.6ghz back in the day and the i5 2400 blew it out of the water. Put a dedicated card in the i5 system if it doesn't have one. You would be far better off spending money on a new GPU for the i5 system, and probably a GPU as well, than wasting it on an ancient Xeon.

Im New to this forum so i dont know any rules, so pardon me. but right now, at this very moment i have an athlon x4 635 3.1ghz.
some company is selling me a Dell workstation for dirt cheap with 6gb ram, and a Six Core XEON l5639. I want to know if this can game, i see no reason as to why it can not. i know its for servers but iam getting it dirt cheap! also has dual pci express 16 2.0 slots. Please someone help. if its better than my Athlon x4 645, im sold. but i would prefer it would match up to an Amd Fx 6300.

its Xeon l5639 six core
6gb ram
and im getting a R9 270x or a gtx 555. and what resolution do you game at? you planning on upgrading?

The 8800 Ultra was the best card in the world for around 2 years. That's a LONG time in GPU land. It's like buying a Titan now, you don't expect that a $1200 card would not still be decent in 6 years.

3930k @ 4.4 Ghz, Gigabyte UP4, 560TI 1GB , 16GB 12800.

The R9 does look VERY tempting, but I just spent $1200 on a sound card for work lol (MR816 CSX), I might have to wait on that.

Haha, when did you get that sound card? its 699 right now at the moment. And wow man, thats an expensive rig! and here iam getting a xeon rig because its slightly cheaper. the only component that bothers me is that the gpu is 200 dollars lol. other wise i can make a cheap build.

It's a lot more expensive here in the UK. Don't know if my price conversion was right, but it's still over $1000 I think.

To be frank, at 1080p I haven't really met a game that makes my rig jitter let alone get choppy maxed out (barring stupid things like 32xAA). Certain games I've played at medium because of flashy stuff getting in the way of my concentration and then there was AMD's hair tech in Tomb Raider (which kills all Nvidia cards except Titans... probably deliberately lol).

But then I haven't played BF3 or 4 on PC and they look like the two most demanding games out there right now. My GPU (and Agility SSD) is the weak link atm, but until I have 4K TV money, I'm not that worried.

The problems i have is I dont know why i still Lag in games at low settings. It doesn't make sense to even lag at all in minecraft with this system BUT it does... By the way an 8800 ultra costed around 700$

dude minecraft should not lag at all... im severely confident its your graphics card. its fairly old so there might be some compatibility issues. Aside from that it has to be some issue.... can you run other games at low or medium settings? if so, what games?
