Whats wrong with Gaming on Xeon's?

Last response: in CPUs

I am buying a computer for gaming, it's an HP XW6600, its a workstation that has a Xeon. I read all about how Xeon's are better used on servers and 2 of them at the same time (this has 1 xeon i believe but has 2 slots). Since i am only paying 255$ for this, i dont see the problem. Also i am putting in a different gaming graphics card. I wont be playing the latest FPS Crysis or battlefield 4. Just looking to play games like minecraft, left 4 dead, grand theft auto 4, saints row 3,2 and maybe 4.

There's nothing wrong with gaming on Xeons. In fact, other than a few features better suited for server usage, they are the same as the Core i-series processors.

That workstation is old and it features Xeons from 2007, so don't expect magic, the processor is very dated and not powerful by current standards.

Knowing the exact model would be good, as that workstation comes with different Xeon options, but generally the desktop analogy would be Core2Quad.

It uses the e5440, i think its at least good value for the station, do you think it would handle the games though?

Yeah, it will be fine, by today's standards it's about half as powerful as a high-end I5, thus in modern terms it would be an entry level CPU, but in games you listed it should be okay as long as you don't go crazy settings spree

Yeah i will see eventually i will upgrade but for now, it should handle games better than this PC it has an I5 2.5Ghz quad core with a 6m cache, the xeon looks better on paper.

An i5 is far better than a core 2 based Xeon.

When this computer doesnt even have a dedicated graphics card, it still sucks for gaming. plus isnt the Xeon i mentioned theoretically faster
than the Core i52400s?

i5 2400 is near the upper tier of gaming CPU's. It is far better gaming CPU than any core 2 based chip. I actually still have mine in my file server. I had an X3210 @ 3.6ghz back in the day and the i5 2400 blew it out of the water. Put a dedicated card in the i5 system if it doesn't have one. You would be far better off spending money on a new GPU for the i5 system, and probably a GPU as well, than wasting it on an ancient Xeon.

Wow.... you are getting very good performance with such an outdated card, a gtx 555 is on sale used for 69 bucks. as for the one im getting.

its Xeon l5639 six core
6gb ram
and im getting a R9 270x or a gtx 555. and what resolution do you game at? you planning on upgrading?

The 8800 Ultra was the best card in the world for around 2 years. That's a LONG time in GPU land. It's like buying a Titan now, you don't expect that a $1200 card would not still be decent in 6 years.

3930k @ 4.4 Ghz, Gigabyte UP4, 560TI 1GB , 16GB 12800.

The R9 does look VERY tempting, but I just spent $1200 on a sound card for work lol (MR816 CSX), I might have to wait on that.

Haha, when did you get that sound card? its 699 right now at the moment. And wow man, thats an expensive rig! and here iam getting a xeon rig because its slightly cheaper. the only component that bothers me is that the gpu is 200 dollars lol. other wise i can make a cheap build.

It's a lot more expensive here in the UK. Don't know if my price conversion was right, but it's still over $1000 I think.
http://www.soundbasemegastore.com/firewire/30929-steinb...

To be frank, at 1080p I haven't really met a game that makes my rig jitter let alone get choppy maxed out (barring stupid things like 32xAA). Certain games I've played at medium because of flashy stuff getting in the way of my concentration and then there was AMD's hair tech in Tomb Raider (which kills all Nvidia cards except Titans... probably deliberately lol).

But then I haven't played BF3 or 4 on PC and they look like the two most demanding games out there right now. My GPU (and Agility SSD) is the weak link atm, but until I have 4K TV money, I'm not that worried.

dude minecraft should not lag at all... im severely confident its your graphics card. its fairly old so there might be some compatibility issues. Aside from that it has to be some issue.... can you run other games at low or medium settings? if so, what games?

I can run Left 4 Dead 2 with
1600x1024 (1600x1560 or whatever rez monitor)
2xmsAA
2x anisoptric filtering
v-sync on triple buffered
all medium settings
high mem pool
multicore proccessing
Playable and smooth (90% of the time)
I also get this annoying texture glitch when they seem to disappear and all i can see is sky and black. it happens for about 3 seconds once every map i think.

Please borrow a gpu, im extremely confident your gpu is messing things up. minecraft should not lag at all...unless you got high texture packs and stuff. i really want you to upgrade and check man. ): im worried now.

The only other thing that MIGHT effect the performance is that the Graphics card is powered by only one six pin because my power supply only has one of them. I think i will get one of those 2 molex to 6 pin adapters and see how that works for now, until i get money to upgrade my psu and graphics card

wohwowhowh...wait. according to what i seen the 8800 ultra requires 2 pcie 6 pins....if your using one, no wonder its destroying your pc. i reccomend switching out the psu or using that molex converter that you said.

Xeons - I have an old Server ( 2.8GHz ; 2 physical processors, 4 cores , 8GB of RAM , Radeon HD3850 ) that I wanted to refurbish as a gamer machine, however Minecraft maxes out at 12fps under Vista, whilst it runs whith almost 40fps under Linux. As the machine is to be primarily runnign Windows, I looked around and heard that the cache settigns for XP and Vista non-server-editions need to be properly adjsuted to the cache settings of the XEONS.. But I don't find any documentation on how to do such a thing.
Anybody with a suggestion or recommendation maybe?
