Safe to upgrade to 8.1?

I've heard that Windows 8.1 has a glitch that breaks or overheats the hard drive making the entire system unusable.

Is this true?

I'd like to upgrade to 8.1 because I'm running some 8.1 apps on 8.0 and its buggy.

Also for the new tile sizes :p

There are major issues with 8.1 if you start playing around with User Accounts. This causes problems with networking and all manner of things, in my case the mouse only works occasionally, when using VLC sound only plays occasionally. Sure, if you get it exactly right it appears to work but that is not really acceptable.

A friend told me not to upgrade because of a bug.
Then I found this:

Came here to confirm, but I'm going to wait for a few more answers before I make a decision.

That article is mixing some RT and standard Windows issues.

I did encounter one issue with my mouse driver, yep still don't believe it myself, that prevented upgrade until I removed the software.

Those that run split drives (small boot SSD, and mechanical disk) and moved the program files directories are having a heck of a time without installing from scratch.

A lot of people had to pre-upgrade their drivers to Windows 8.1 compatible ones, and some OEM computers haven't quite caught up on that front.

Not heard of any hard drive overheating issues, that would seem to be impossible.
