Is the 8350 really worth getting?

I'm upgrading my CPU (will be AMD, not going for Intel so don't bother trying to talk me into it) - I was thinking of getting the 8350. The 8320 is like £30 less which I wouldn't mind saving, and the 6300 is like £70 less than the 8350. Would I see much difference with the 8350/8320/6300 while streaming/gaming/rendering? I'm stuck with the 4100 at the moment which just isn't cutting what I need and is bottlenecking me.

Note that the 8350 couldn't be bought until Christmas, and I sort of need the upgrade as soon as I can. If the 8320 is just as good, I can buy it right as we speak.

I'd say 8320 and get a cooler (CM Hyper 212 EVO) unless you already have one, to allow you to overclock to 8350 speeds. :) If not, get the 8320 and leave it as is, and overclock further down the line. For current games, unless they're well threaded (newer ones) you won't see any benefit from the extra cores. They will however be good to use for streaming and recording, yes. Since the 8320 is piledriver you will see a performance boost regardless though.

I'm guessing your 4100 is a bulldozer? I'm upgrading from a 6200 bulldozer to an 8320 piledriver (assembling tomorrow), i'll let you know if I see significant performance differences. :)

I was in the same situation not to long ago and I went for the 8320 and over clocked it to 4.2Ghz. I honestly don't know if you'll see a difference one way or the other between 6 or 8 cores but as for myself i would rather have more than less.

There's no guarantee, all chips have different overclocking potential, but I would be surprised if any 8320 couldn't overclock to 8350 speeds with little effort. That being said, you should factor in the cost of an aftermarket cooler (so you can overclock past even the 8350 speeds) and make sure you are using a motherboard that can handle the extra power draw from overclocking.

The 6300 should perform about as well as the 8350 (clock for clock) in most tasks except rendering.

The eight "core" CPU's will generally render faster because that task is highly threaded and can make use of the extra cores.

They are the exact same CPU, the 8350 is just an overclocked 8320. Go get the 8320 and get a good cooler, like the Hyper 212 EVO or what ever good cpu cooler you prefer, then overclock it to whatever speed. You would be able to make it just as fast or faster than a stock 8350 and you would keep it at a good temp.

I have a 7870 - so soon the same CPU and GPU as you.

Could you update me on differences? Have you done benchmark tests for games/renders? (arma 2 would be nice)

I was supposed to add the FX 8320 and Hyper 212 EVO into my rig today and do some tests. However, amazon sent me the wrong cooler so my upgrade will be delayed for about a week. If I get it set up before you have your rig ready I'll be sure to do some benches. The dangers of buying online huh :p

For the meantime here are some HD 7870 benchmarks: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/03/05/amd-radeon-hd-7870-2gb-review/4
The tests were conducted on an i5-2500k, so similar performance to the 8320 for the most part.
