a So im stuck in deciding whoch route to go.

I currently have a gigabyte r9 280x. Im hardly able to overclock this card with out it locking up and having to restart computer. Cant overclock the memory at all and can only achieve a core of 1160 that is stabile. Im wondering if ive recieved a defective card or possibly my psu cant handle the bump in power consumption.

Im also debating on rma'ing the gigabyte for an asus 280x matrix and update my psu at same time.

Any suggestions?

Here is my current set up.

asus fx990 r2.0 mobo
fx6100 oc'd to 3.8 (upgrading to 8350)
gigabyte r9 280x
2x4gb g-skill 1600
1tb hdd
600watt psu (lower grade)

More about : gigabyte 280x upgrade asus 280x matrix

Well since the card handles std clocks they will not find anything wrong with it and will charge you restocking fee.

The gigabyte website says the card needs a 600 watt power supply, minimum. That would lead me to believe that to over clock, you would need a larger power supply. I don't know from experience, as I dont have the r9 series yet, but upgrade your power supply to a high quality (corsair, seasonic) 750- 800 Watt power supply to provide a cushion for over clocking. And doing that would save you the pain of RMA'ing a product. they can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month and you dont want to wait.

A low quality 600w PSU may not be enough to push an overclock. I would upgrade the PSU before replacing the card.

Well total system load should not exceed 400watts http://www.anandtech.com/show/7400/the-radeon-r9-280x-r... but if your 600watt PSU is a crappy unit rated at peak it can have the specs of a medium quality 400-450 unit which would not be sufficient.

Thanks for the input guys. Im going to upgrade to a solid 850 psu first and go from there.
