Hi. I'm torn between which CPU (laptop) to choose,

4th gen Haswell: i3-4xxxU and i5-4xxxU (1.60Ghz)

or

or 3rd gen i7-3537U (2.00Ghz)

Honestly, my half brain keeps telling me to get latest CPU generation but at the cost of lower clock speed. other half chooses oldest generation with faster clock speed. The only different i noticed is within their GPU, Haswell uses HD Graphics 4400 while 3rd gen uses HD Graphics 4000.

Which one of these produce more heat (i really want to avoid overheat on laptop).

Thank you

Then look at what the OP is asking about: ULV chips. Not 35W or 45W chips, or desktop chips. The power consumption and better iGPUs easily outweigh a small performance increase on the CPU (probably 5%).

Since you are selecting ULV chips, I assume power efficiency is a concern. For that concern, the Haswell ULV chips are much better. The i7-3xxxU are a bit more powerful CPU-wise, but trail in power effiecency and GPU performance. Overall I recommend the Haswell. Hope this helps!

Yeah but it's something. I'm a very power-hungry person haha :p

Not really sure what is the different between M & U denotation at the end of the cpu series. 90% of the time, the laptop will just be sitting on the table, with the battery is taken off (i rarely used laptop battery, even while traveling). I just want the CPU that will not overheat faster and starting to make humming noises. I had a serious major issue regarding overheating in laptop, which i wasted 6 notebooks in total since 2002 (all of them have nvidia/ati/amd radeon, not really sure if VGA contributes greater heat)

for note: the Intel Core i5-4xxxU is on HP laptop, while i7-3xxxU is on DELL laptop. Reliability-wise, which one should i go for? (i heard both notebook HP & DELL are competing in downgrade-reliability over the past years)
