My son purchased a SSD drive to use as a boot up drive (to make his computer faster). Every time we can get as far as cloning but we don't want to clone as it takes up more space than the SSD has. How do we successfully install this thing?

What are you using to clone the device?

It keeps trying to use the Samsung Magician. Should we unplug the hd before we try to install the ssd?

From my experiences with imaging, you need a different computer to extract all the info off of it. You can not do it with the drive in use.

If I was your son, I would just load a new os onto the drive and use the old one as storage. You should be able to recover all the old info from that drive too.
