Nutshell: I built a computer and at present, I'm getting "FATAL ERROR: ROUNDING Was [xxx], expected less than 0.4" consistently on "Worker 8" from Prime95. This error comes up within seconds of starting the test.

How confidently would you say the CPU has gone bad. More info below...

----

I built a computer some time ago. I got off to a rough start from the get-go. Problems up the a$$. After a couple months, I isolated the problem to the motherboard and replaced it with a different brand / model.

Problems fixed - it tested and ran fine (y-cruncher and prime95).

I've been using the PC for gaming, video rendering / compressing and general usage (typing, facebook, fourms, etc).

All was going fine but as of a few days ago (shortly after BF4's launch*), I started getting hard locks.

I'll spare you the details but I've removed all new hardware. Problem still exists.

Prime95 illustrates the problem with a failure on Worker #8 "FATAL Error: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4". The result (0.5 in the example) is always different.

How strong would you say this indicates a failed / failing CPU?

I'm not overclocked at all nor have I ever been on this build.

Could a heavy video rendering load have damaged an un-overclocked CPU?

I'd leave the computer rendering overnight. The queue would be between 5 and 6 hours worth a material.

I wouldn't have expected this to be possible....

Thank you for any info you can provide.

* During the BF4 beta, (oct 1st), I recorded and rendered a lot of video. That is the bulk of the 6 hour render queues.

Just to double check, go in the bios and check your voltage. The auto voltage function is wonky.

I booted in to Ubuntu Linux and ran y-cruncher. Same failure.

Voltage is all stock. Nothing is overclocked or tweaked.

I will, it won't hurt. But the thing of note here is that its ALWAYS Worker #8 (processor affinity on) within a few seconds. There is no deviation here....

I've found the problem. Sparing you guys the details, I accidentally changed a setting in the BIOs that overclocked the computer to 4.4GHz (from 4GHz). I don't know what the voltages were set to (probably still the stock speed) but now that I put my BIOs back to how I wanted it, the Prime95 test has passed all 10 tests on each thread without a problem.

I'm embarrassed to have originally posted this question as I should have checked that. I don't know how I accidentally changed the setting and saved it but the settings were clearly out of wack and the clock speed was higher than I had previously set it to.

Ultimately, I'm glad the CPU didn't get burned up from the video encoding or my accidental setting change.

I marked this as the solution because your point to go double check is what prompted me to go in to the BIOs and lead me to realize the clock speed was higher than I wanted it.

Thank you for your feedback and time writing. It is appreciated.
