My first build had a Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard with a AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 .

I'm looking to upgrade the processor but not sure what my options are? Any idea what i could do or is it better just to get a new Motherboard and processor.

Go here and click on "CPU Support": http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A79XTD_EVO/#support

Those are the processors you can use in that motherboard. Though, it is complicated since certain CPUs are only supported by certain PCB and bios versions. To be sure that a CPU would work, you have to figure out what PCB version your board is and what bios revision you are currently using (though you can just update to a compatible bios with your current CPU hooked up).

And depending on what you're looking to achieve with this upgrade, you might be better off with getting a new mobo and CPU altogether.
