Is it possible to transfer files from my mac book (or any pc/ laptop period) to the WD my book live duo directly without the router? eg. WD my book live duo attached directly to mac book via usb cable, or ethernet cable?

No, sorry, It only transfers via Ethernet. It has a USB 3.0 port but only for adding additional drives to its array. Via Ethernet cable, not so sure.
