Ok so to begin I have:

NZXT Phantom Full Tower
i5-2500k
will have the R9-290X very soon like tomorrow

I have never watercooled but I can learn quickly, however, I'm looking at this kit:
Swiftech H20-220 EDGE HD Series Liquid Cooling Kit
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14569/ex-wat-185/Swiftech_H20-220_EDGE_HD_Series_Liquid_Cooling_Kit_-_Black_CPU_Block_Universal_Mount.html?tl=g30c321s818

That seems to have everything into one so I won't have to buy a whole lot of extra parts except waterblock which comes to my next question.

Which EK waterblock should I get(acetal+nickel, nickel, acrylic)? I'm at least getting the backplate for aesthetics.

That above watercooling kit also has a 320 version. It says its not compatible with the Phantom but I've seen youtube videos making it possible. Would it be a good idea or should the 220 be enough?

Is there anything else I should make myself aware of in pursuit of cooling my system?

I'd invest in a setup that allows for more flexibility in case you want to water cool you R9-290x in the future like the XSPC Raystorm 750 EX240 Extreme Universal CPU Water Cooling Kit . It comes with everything you need to start a custom loop.

It's like a $90.00 savings, better parts and the money saved will go a long way towards a block for your GPU. The EK Radeon R9-290X VGA Liquid Cooling Block goes for $106.99 so that means for $17.00 more than you pay for just a CPU cooler you can do an entire CPU/GPU loop.
