Hello all. Long time visitor first time poster... Was looking to get an opinion on an upgrade I'm looking at. I currently have dual 6870's in CF and have an opportunity to get a Gigabyte Windforce 3 7950 for $170(it's only 4 months old, he has receipt). I've heard single card is a good way to go and was wondering if I'll see a bit better performance and are there other advantages going with the 7950? The 6870's have been great but was told about this card and was like hmmm... Thanks for your time and advice!

My Sapphire 7950 is superb. Mine overclocked like a champ (Most Sapphires do). The only thing the card can't do at 1080p is run 4-8X AA on newer titles. The Gigabyte 7950 has an amazing cooler and should still overclock fairly well.

The 7950 is a good card, that's also a good price, however here are some questions to ask:

Why is he selling it?
Is it damaged?
Do I need a new card right now?
When can I upgrade after this? (Keep in mind the next gen is coming out in like the next 6 months (this includes AMD and Nvidia)
Can I afford it?

If you need it, it's in mint condition I say go for it since that is a relatively big upgrade for a reasonable price mind you...

For double that money you'd only get a RX9280

Keep and save 1 vote
get 7950 1 vote(looks like it).

Ok, so if I'd go newer I do have a budget of like $250ish. How about one of those R9s? Like the 270X? It has less shaders and less memory than the 7950, would that be better? I dunno. I only upgrade every now and then. Just happened to have a few extra bucks and wanted to do something with the computer. Just wanna make the right decision and it's really hard to save now a days(I know you all know that). Thanks again for the replies and your time.

He is selling it cause he went with 'ol Green(he has money to just upgrade when he wants to, must be nice!) and it works great. He has shown it off running thru it's paces. He has all the original manuals, accs, and box with it also the receipt, rest of 3 year warranty. It's really hard to save and I just wanna figure out if this would be a good plan or wait and hope I can save for better?? Argh, darn technology.... Thanks everyone for your time and patience ! :)

If you were looking at buying either two 6870 to CF, or a 7950 .....I would recommend the 7950.
But your not. The CF6870's are a little better than a 7950 (high end 7970). If you are playing at 1080p and having no troubles, you would be spending 170 you really don't need to. I would save for a better long term upgrade from what you presently have, not something on par.

Ok I see your point. So, the R9s are the new gen? Would a 280x be a better path??? I think I could manage that, especially if I can sell one or both of the 6870s. They do run good, I do have some issues running stuff in 1080. Just been forever since I upgraded video cards. Just replaced the cpu, mb, and memory not too long ago and wanted to get a new video card. Thanks for all the answers and putting up with someone that asks too many questions!! :p

It's about as good as what you have, but you will have less issue (CF) more Vram. It's really up to you if you want to spend the money ... The 7950 is a crazy OCer too. I am liiing at bang for your buck compared to what you presently have. And presently, what you have....assuming you have no complaints or issues... is not much worse than the options you are looking at, so why spending the money how ever tempting it may be.

Prices will also fall a bit as time goes by.
