Solution
You should be just fine, then. Your friend is over-guessing things a fair bit. Would you be stressing the PSU less if you had a larger PSU? Yes.
But that's a decently made power supply and can handle a little bit of stress.
The 470 has a TDP of 215w, so two of them has a TDP of 430w, add in another 130ish for the CPU, plus a handful for everything else and another handful as overhead, and you're looking at a 600w power supply bare minimum, better if it's a 650. You'd want that to be a good one, and you need to make sure you have enough PCIe power connectors.

Also, you wrote your question in the 'title' box not the actual question box, so if you could tell us the rest of your computer and especially what power supply you have, it would help us help you a lot.

hi, thanks for the reply.

here's my system specs and the queston.

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz, GTX 470, 6gb RAM, 2x1TB HDD
60 GB SSD, ASUS P6X58D-E, Corsair CX600, Corsair H50. LG Blu-Ray Writer, M-Audio Delta 1010LT Soundcard.

the question was:

hi, i'm thinking of buying another nvidea gtx470 to link up through sli, but started to get a bit worried if my psu would be overloaded by the second gpu. a friend recommended i get at least an 850w psu. are there any recommendations and will this be able to power everything?

Thanks a lot!

will go ahead and get the second gpu, am not planning huge gaming sessions on it, but rather wanted to get my rendering times down on HD Video a bit.

should have said that in the beginning really.

anyway, that's my anxiety out the window, thanks again. mark.
