4930k and Asus Sabertooth x79

Solution
If you are just going to be gaming, you don't need an i7 extreme. You don't even really need an i7 for gaming to be honest, the i5-4670K often performs better at gaming than the i7.

Only reason to get an i7 extreme is if you are going to be doing some professional kind of work like editing or rendering.

Extreme chips actually have an X in their model numbers, usually about $1000 as well. X in X79 doesn't stand for Extreme, just a type designation, like Z, P, and B.

There are many CPUs on the X79 platform that are fine for gaming, though you do pay a bit of a premium on the motherboard. But you get quad channel memory and 40 PCIe lanes rather then 32.

i7-4820k, I7-3820 are basically equivalent to the Haswell and Ivy 3770k, and 4770k.

3930k, 4930k are hex core CPUs, really not necessary for gaming.

For a small amount of editing, you should get a 4770K, it will perform well in rendering and editing programs, and is cheaper than the 4930K.

Thanks for the reply Eximo. Was hoping to stay a wee bit ahead of future game software that may take advantage of hyper-threading but this is probably fruitless. Was also adding 2 gtx770s and having some PCIe lines spare for ? sounded good.

Thanks for the reply monsta. Had a look at the Z87 Sabertooth but not sure that I'm upto the overclocking know how required for this board. The 4770K does look like a decent cpu though.
