having just built my first computer on my own. im trying to learn the ins and outs of the computer and hardware. when going through the motherboard manaul, i see a clear cmos, but not much about it. it didnt even say when or why you would do it. it was just in the manual stating it was on it.

so what is the purpose of the cmos and what are the necessary uses for it.

my motherboard is the msi z87 g45

Solution
The clear CMOS is like the "reset to factory settings" on cellphones. It reverts all settings to stock values.

This is most useful for Overclockers because when OC fails and it fails to boot, you just click the reset CMOS then you can boot again.

In short CMOS is Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor. Typically refers to a battery-powered memory chip in your computer that stores startup information. Your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) uses this information when starting your computer.

Most CMOS batteries will last the lifetime of a motherboard (up to 10 years in most cases) but will sometimes need to be replaced. Incorrect or slow system date and time and loss of BIOS settings are major signs of a dead or dying CMOS battery.
