keep in mind i've little knowledge on this subject, so if my questions sound dumb i'm sorry. to further clarify this is pertaining to a home network.

was browsing the internet earlier and received a random message from my cable provider (didn't know that they could do that by the way) that told me i needed to upgrade to a newer modem that used docsis 3.0 signaling to get a benefit from a recent speed boost. since than i've been looking through the modems suggested by the internet provider.

suggested modems

from the list i was thinking of buying the netgear CMD31T since it had a lower price and i already have a router. but looking around i'm worried that my router wont be able to make use of the speed boost from this new modem.

i'm using a cisco linksys E2500 wireless router that i got about a year ago, and from a few sites i've found around the internet it sounds like that type of router has a cap speed output that is lower than the modem. i'm just wondering of someone could explain if this is true or not and if true would you suggest i go with a new modem with wireless router function?

I would strongly recommend the Motorola SB 6141, great DOCSIS 3.0 modem without any issues that I am aware of and I've used them in dozens of installs without issue and they work with every router that I've ever put on them from old 54Gs to ASUS RT-AC66U.

I would not buy a combo unit, so you can upgrade the router in the future if needed. I would just get the new modem and use your E2500 for now. You must consider not only your modem, but if you go with a new technology you must ask if all of your adapter support it? When you do upgrade you can use the E2500 as an AP at the distant end of the house.
