I have a Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition GFX card and I recently found out that I was running my integrated graphics by mistake. When I tried plugging in a DVI to VGA adapter to my monitor the monitor simply went into sleep mode.
my setup was DVI port - DVI to VGA - VGA cable --monitor.

Is this a problem with my monitor or with my graphics card?

Edit: my computer seems to not even recognize that i have a graphics card

Is your monitor plugged into the gfx card port or the on-board port?

when my monitor is plugged into the graphics card the screen tells me that there is no input coming from the computer and I should wiggle my mouse or hit the keyboard

1) Are you connected from the DVI port on your HD 7870 with a DVI/VGA adapter through a VGA cable, and then plugged into the VGA port of your monitor?
2) Is your monitor switched to receive an analog (VGA) input and not digital (DVI)?
3) Is the vga adapter plugged into the correct DVI port on the HD 7870? Only the DVI-I port has analog (VGA). the DVI-D does not. http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/dual-dvi.jpg (although it would be darn near impossible to plug the vga adapter into the DVI-D port)
