HDMI Audio Possible WITHOUT Video?

Hey guys, so I have a MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming series motherboard, an MSI GTX 760 2GB OC edition, a Pioneer VSX-1122K 7.1 receiver, and a BenQ XL2420T display all running on Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center x64, nVidia drivers v331.65, Intel drivers v10.18.10.3316. All latest.

Currently I have it hooked up where my monitor gets a 120hz 1080p signal from my GTX 760 via DVI, and audio goes to the Pioneer receiver via HDMI. This works great, however it forcibly renders a second display over HDMI just so that it can produce audio. The onboard Intel HD 4600 is the same way. I simply cannot find a way to make is *just* produce audio over HDMI without rendering a second screen... This is super annoying as sometimes windows open in the second display and I have to switch my video inputs around every time JUST to move the window to the correct monitor.

My question is, is it possible to render only audio via HDMI so I dont have to constantly deal with a second video display? I'd like to point out that the reason I use HDMI for audio is to have lossless 5.1 surround sound. Thanks in advance!

Agreed. Your motherboard has both Optical and Coaxial S/PDIF digital audio outputs. Your receiver accepts both of these as inputs. I would recommend abandoning your attempts and HDMI audio outputs and switch to either of these sources.

I can't use Digital Optical/TOSlink because it doesnt support lossless 5.1, and PC games dont support Dolby Digital/DTS so they would all play in stereo...

I have to be able to play videogames in surround sound and have lossless audio.

You can buy a HDMI sound card like the Auzentech X-Fi HTHD or the Xonar HDAV. They still require a HDMI video input, but you can provide this using a dummy signal from a VGA to HDMI adapter. These adapters always output a HDMI video signal even without connecting anything to the VGA input. The sound card will mix the PC audio into the HDMI signal and send it to your receiver.

Otherwise buy a receiver with multi-channel analog inputs such as the Marantz SR5008. The problem with this is you cannot apply DSP functions such as room correction, treble / bass or speaker distances to the multi-channel analog inputs since it bypasses the DSP and goes directly to the amplifier stage in most receivers.

Another option is to buy the Gefen HD Pattern Signal Generator (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/gtb-hd-siggen.jsp?prod_id=9923). This will allow you to embed 7.1 analog audio from a sound card into a HDMI signal. It internally generates the HDMI video signal.
