I would go with a GTX 780 and the one with the best cooler. So in this case it will be the MSI GTX 780 Gaming. But the ASUS DirectCU II is a better card for the same price, so that would be the best choice in my opinion.

As for getting a GTX 770 and adding another one later, that would give you more performance per dollar when you eventually add a second card, but I don't think it will be worth the wait especially considering how quickly graphics cards get old nowadays. And then there are the complications of multi-GPU configs such as heat, noise, power draw, and compatibility.

As a heads up, Nvidia will be releasing the GTX 780 Ti and the GTX 780 GHz edition pretty...

As a heads up, Nvidia will be releasing the GTX 780 Ti and the GTX 780 GHz edition pretty soon. The GHz edition probably won't be worth the extra cost, you can just overclock the card yourself. But the 780 Ti could be a bit of a game changer, so if your budget allows for a mid $600 graphics card, the 780 Ti might be worth the wait.

Going sli with 2 780s would be the way to go and i havent seen any issues other then maybe a very few games that dont support it but most of those games can be run on a single gpu easy. As far as noise/heat i havent ran into that and if you have a pretty solid case with good air flow heat wont be an issue.
