Building my new rig and want to know which route to go down. I've heard that the R9 290x scales fairly well when crossfired but I'm also acutely aware of the issues that come along with having more than one GPU. So, this begs the question: do I shuck out the extra $100 for two R9 290x, deal with the high heat and high power consumption or go with the tried-n-true strength of the Titan? Feel free to pontificate all you want. I want someone to make me lean one way or another rather resolutely.

Crysis 3 is the most demanding game benchmarked lately

As you can see here, the GTX 780 and R9 290X are pretty darn close. However, now the GTX 780 is about $50 cheaper and can be overclocked 10-15% while the R9 290X, as of now, really cannot. So the GTX 780 is your best deal. At your resolution, you don't need 4GB VRAM. Add to that your cooler and quieter board, the GTX 780 wins hands down, plus the driver issues will be better with Nvidia GTX 780.

Frankly, the Titan offers little over the 780. It doubles the amount of RAM so if you wanted to use 3X30inch monitors it would really come in handy, but for your display, there is no need for the Titan.

Have you considered two 780 in SLI? this might be a better option, given that Nvidia just dropped the price from $650 to $500. A pair of these badboys will eat a single GTX Titan for lunch. R9 290X crossfire being the most expensive option will give you the best performance. But if you asked me, I would rather stick with Nvidia. Apart from better driver support and physx, you can also get shadowplay that allows you to record your gameplay video, geforce experience that finds the best gaming settings for your system. To be fair, AMD launched their own suite of software, but they seem half-baked and will take a long time to mature.
