Hi community!

First of all, sorry if my english isn't the best ;D.. I'm having this strange issue with my new gpu (MSI R7870 Hawk) where some games (So far Battlefield 3 and Batman Arkham City) crash to desktop with no error or warning after some time playing, A couple of times batman gave an error that said "Video device removed".. So I started testing, i ran furmark with the shortest test and GPU reached 77° C with 99% load. (As far as i read over the internet 77°C is a normal temperature under heavy load). Then i used GPU-Z to log during a battlefield 3 session this is the log at the moment of crashing (Formated)

Right Before Crash
2013-10-31 21:20:14

GPU Core Clock [MHz] 1100.0
GPU Memory Clock [MHz] 1200.0
GPU Temperature [°C] 73.0
Fan Speed (%) [%] 48
Fan Speed (RPM) [RPM] 2197
GPU Load [%] 97
GPU Load [%] 1104
Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] 335
VDDC [V] 1.219

Right after Crash
2013-10-31 21:20:28

GPU Core Clock [MHz] 1100.0
GPU Memory Clock [MHz] 1200.0
GPU Temperature [°C] 67.0
Fan Speed (%) [%] 46
Fan Speed (RPM) [RPM] 2149
GPU Load [%] 0
GPU Load [%] 0
Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] 1
VDDC [V] 0.900

I've no clue what's going on.. could the card be broken??

My Specs:

MoBo: Asus V-Formula -z
CPU: AMD FX 8320
RAM: 2x 4GB Kingston hyperx 1333mhz ddr3 (Dual Channel)
SSD: Samsung 840 - 120Gb
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 1Tb
PSU: Sentey Solid Power 750W
OS: Windows 7 - Professional (SP1)
Video Drivers: I tried both stable and beta
13-9_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql (Stable)
AMD_Catalyst_13.11_BetaV7 (Beta)

Extra Information:

- SP1 was manually installed when BF4 Beta was released, but i played the beta without problems.

Thanks in advance and let me know if you need mor information!! :D

Solution
Hi,
Likely not a Sys Mem issue but run Memtest anyway: www.memtest.org
Get MSI's utility that allows you to change the clock and DOWNCLOCK it as much as possible.

For example, put the GPU to 900MHz and the Memory to 1000MHz. If that runs stable then you can increase it until you find the highest point that it never crashes.

Summary:
- run MEMTEST (at least 10 minutes)
- downclock GPU and Memory

Hi there!

Thanks for the reply, I tired what you said (partialy)

1) Ran Memtest for over an hour and showed 0 errors
2) Used AMD Overdrive to downclock to 900Mhz (Clock) and 1000 Mhz (Memory) .. then I ran furmark 5 times in a row (The 1 minute preset) and it didn't crashed, but it reached 80°C. I haven't tried any game yet caouse i didn't have time, but i'm trying that this evening and posting back to let you know!.

Thanks again!

Updating here..

So I did some cable management and adjusted the GPU fan Curve using AfterBurner, and so far I've played without problem, GPU isn't even reaching 70°C after a long session of BF3 or Batman.. I'm even using a 50Mhz OC in both GPU and Mem, and passed OCCT 1hour test.. so I guess the system is stabilized.. we can set this case as solved!

Thanks a lot!
