Not a techy person so bare with me please. I own an Acer Aspire M7720, 12GB Ram, Intel i7 920, Radeon HD 4850. I'd like to upgrade it to catch up with with the wow-graphics games that are coming out in the future but I have no idea where to start or how much will it cost. Personally I think I need to start on the graphics card but no idea which one is compatible. What good gpu do you guys think would go?

so far, AMD has an edge in BF4. now whether this is because of AMD's Mantle API or they just have better drivers, i'm not one to say. the latter is a game of waiting for new drivers at least if you're devoted to Nvidia.

my vote's on amd's R9 280X, costing $20-30 less than a 770. a 290X is within that $700 budget including a PSU, but the temperature on them is worrying and i'd rather wait how much custom coolers will help there. some suggestions;

My monitor's 1920x1080. Id like to play say bf4 in high quality with 60fps. Would it be possible to have something like it with a budget of only $700?

Ok for this we are going to need to start at the cpu. If the cpu is still running stock speeds (2.66ghz) you could really benefit from a overclock. I'd recommend getting a new cooler (cm hyper 212 is great for the price). I think that a new psu would be a good idea. Then in terms of video cards, I'd say gtx 770 or something around that level of performance

@ Meare: Most likely overclocking is not an option, most prebuilt systems have the required features locked or removed from the BIOS-Still, no harm in looking.
Right now it's clear BF4 is a hugely demanding title, but it's still a Beta (testing) release, how the game will perform in its retail incarnation is unknown.
There's not long to go before final release and we'll almost certainly see a lot of info on the 'net once it is, so I suggest you keep a close eye on a few sites and see how the final game performs before making any changes to the current system.
Places that are not as nice as Toms but sometimes come in slightly useful: Techpowerup, X-bit labs, Hardwarecanucks and guru of 3D-amongst LOTS of others. ;)

you may need to consider getting a new case as well if your's don't have the space for the GPU, so get that measuring tape out.

Looks like anything from the HD7950 upwards will be enough-those numbers are for the top setting, the frame rates will be better with the quality dialled down to high-even dropping the AA to zero will add 20-30% to those numbers.
The CPU is old, but still more than capable, even at stock speeds but I'd suggest the HD7950?GTX760 if you cannot/are unwilling to overclock and the R9 280/GTX770 if you can/will.
As always, in an OEM case, check the card will fit-time to check the detailed specs and get the tape measure out.
