This will be my very first build and I'm looking forward to it!
My budget is ~1500$.
I am open to Crossfire/SLI and overclocking as long as there is a capable cooling system present.
The display device is a 1080p 50" HDTV via HDMI.

I need advice/recommendations on PSU, Motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, and cooling.

I'm not picky on a case. (do I choose based on the size of the MB?)

I am basing most of my predetermined decisions on the reviews here on Tom's Hardware. If there is something better and more suited please say so.

CPU:
Intel Core i5-3570K

SSD:
Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB

I'd like to be able to play BF4 on the highest possible settings.

Mostly BF3 up until now. I haven't been able to play some recently released games so I'll be going back to play them. (Farcry 3, Crysis, ARMA 3)

My main intention is BF4 and future proofing.

Well you can get 280x too as it will supporting mantle and BF4 be adding mantle in BF4 by December. Both of the cards are literally neck and neck in performance

-i5 is fine for gaming.
-Dropped the SSD to 120gb.
-SLI 770s.

I did some quick research. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't Crossfire R9280x's outperform SLI 770s?

And also, if I start the system out with a single card then upgrade to SLI/Crossfire, would I benefit from the i7 capabilities? Or should I stick with an i5?

No. i5 is a very capable CPU and it won't bottleneck 2 way multi GPU config

Hello

Ive just built mine a few months back and bought bf4 last night and woke up at 530 to play :) 25gig DL it played very well on all my stock setup. Ive just got a h100 and more fans which should reduce my temps down from 70° on cpu n gpu! When they arrive.

i didnt do any fps tests but i will try tonight the cpu on stock coped fine for multiplayer

the auto gfx settings were on high and i seemed not to lag and saw my death each and every time very clearly :D

I've been doing so much reading last night and this morning. My head is going to explode soon I think.

On the i5 vs. i7 debate, I've looked at tons of comparisons and threads throughout Google and here on Tom's. I think just for the sake of it, I'm going to stick with an i7-4770. I sound blockheaded but I want this computer to last me quite some time. If I can spend the money for the 4770 now and use this PC for purposes other than gaming in the future, I think it makes more sense (atleast in my head) to go with an i7 right away.

I've come up with this. Thoughts? I know some stuff I have listed is total overkill but my budget isn't much of a budget per say, it's just a roundabout number where I wanted to land. That setup with a single R9 280x seems like a fantastic system.

Well I guess you can always take the i7 and not SLI the 770s yet. However, remember that games do not benefit from hyperthreading so the i7 will perform the same as an i5.

About your build, drop the Asus Maximus and grab the ASRock Z87 Extreme4. It's much cheaper and it can SLI/crossfire, overclock, and has enough expansion slots for you.
Stick with 2x4gb of ram. Games do not even use more than 6gb, so 8gb is plenty enough.
No need for PRO series SSD. The 840 EVO is cheaper and just as fast.
You might want to add a HDD for mass storage, unless you already have one.
Grab the XFX psu I posted above. Same price and it's higher watts so you won't be stressing out your psu as much when you crossfire/SLI.

I would be going with a GTX 770 because it's stronger. Also, since the price was reduce to $330 from $400, it's only a little bit more.

I understand they will perform the same.

Gaming is the main intention of this rig but for all I know I will use it for more than that in the future. Trying to keep myself ahead of, well, myself

Haha. I know that feel bro. Anyways if you think you can utilize the i7 then you should go for it else in gaming i5 and i7 will perform the same.

And go for 800-850W PSU as if in future you want to SLI then nothing will be holding you back. I'd suggest get MSI GTX 770 Hawk. It is a very good GPU and will serve you well.

And don't get the pro, get evo.

And for the mobo go for MSI GD 65 gaming or Asrock z87 extreme4.

And 212 evo is good but if its fine with you go for a bit expensive(better) cooler as it'll be better for overclocking your CPU
