Samsung 840 Pro Freezing in Windows 7...Bad Drive?

Hi, I just installed a 256g 840 Pro on an Asus P5Q Pro and am getting really weird freezes periodically (like every 20 minutes). The system was stable in XP with a velociraptor for years, but I decided to upgrade to an SSD and Windows 7, and now it's completely unstable.

I've updated every driver I could find, disconnected all other drives and run the magician tool thing. It's in AHCI, if that matters.

I'm completely new to SSDs and Windows 7, so I don't know how to determine if the drive is bad or if there's a conflict or bad driver or something somewhere. The drive itself has the latest firmware. Any ideas?

It typically either has a mouse stutter that it recovers from or it will hard freeze and restart. There was only a BSOD once so far with a "stop: 0x00000124" message. All other times it just goes to black then restarts.

Thanks.

Edit: Just updated the mobo BIOS from 1306 to the latest 2102 and it didn't make a difference. I've set all CPU parameters back to default and it still freezes. I'm really at a loss here.

Run the Samsung Magician or CrystalDisk Info to check out the drive SMART values. If they are good then the drive is fine. It may well just be a bad Windows 7 install from some corruption. I would backup my data and do a repair installation like THIS or even a clean reinstallation after doing a secure erase on the drive.

OK, thanks. I'll try that when I get home to make sure it's not the drive. I know the magician thing says drive status "good"

Magician says the drive is good. The only thing that has gotten me a small amount of stability is changing AHCI to IDE mode in bios, but it still freezes sometimes. I guess I'm going to try reinstalling windows in IDE mode and see what happens.
