hello. i currently have a dell xps 7100 with a 785g amd motherboard, phenom 2 1035t x6, 4 gbs of ram and a radeon 5870. i have a 460w altec psu (http://i.imgur.com/ydn2VIz.jpg).
if it helps - here's my full paste of specs from cpu-z
http://pastebin.com/kJ0HY6Dp
i picked up a sapphire 7870 from newegg and i'm not very impressed with the results. in furmark, i'm going from 36fps (1080p no aa) with the 5870 - to 43 fps (same settings) with the 7870. in 640x360 res, i go from 70 to 100 fps. in my games, i get a minimal increase in fps. i'd like to squeeze as much as i can out of this 7870 with a new cpu, and if i can't get a good upgrade, i'm going to return the card because the small increase in fps isn't worth the $150.
i need some direction as to what kind of cpu would be best for me paired with the 7870. do i just need one with high clock speed, or should i go for high cores instead/also? in addition to that, how many cores would be ideal for games released in the last couple of years, and would those same number of cores be best for futureproofing?
i was thinking around a 3.5-3.8 ghz with four cores, but this was all i could find:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113287
...and that cpu has a nearly identical score on cpubenchmark.net as my 1035t.
otherwise, i would have to go with six cores and i've heard that a lot of current games don't take full advantage of six cores.
so, in a nutshell i just want to hear what you guys think as far as a cpu recommendation to pair with my 7870 where i would not bottleneck (or avoid as much bottleneck as possible). btw, i do not want to upgrade my psu or mobo - just the cpu.
thank you!
