Hey, all. I want your opinions on something.

I'm starting an indie film project and my old Hewlett Packard tower just isn't going to cut it when it comes to editing/rendering the footage I shoot. Do you guys think it'd be possible to build a computer for editing HD video on the cheap?

I've got about $500-$600 to spend on the initial setup with plans to add hard drives / RAM / disk drives as the need arises.

Can a usable computer be built for $500, or should I put some money back and try to build on a bigger budget? Are there areas where I can cut costs without affecting my ability to edit video? I don't plan to play games on this particular computer, so I figure an expensive GPU isn't a priority.

As always, thanks in advance for your advice.

EDIT: I made the assumption that building a computer would be the way to go, but I'd like to also ask your opinion on going with a prebuilt system. Would it be a bad idea to pick one up premade?

I think about $800 would be a good budget to aim for, since you are not just gaming. This would be good for $800

AMD FX-8350 Processor: http://amzn.to/101HuEZ

Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 Motherboard: http://amzn.to/11VVy4F

EVGA GTX 650Ti Boost Graphics Card: http://amzn.to/Zyx57h

8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Memory: http://amzn.to/ZkATWc

120GB Samsung 840 Series SSD: http://amzn.to/101HXag

1TB Western Digital Caviar Green Hard Drive: http://amzn.to/158lFv8

500W Corsair CX500 Power Supply: http://amzn.to/11VW56E

Corsair Carbide 200R Case: http://amzn.to/YcbEYx

It would be a very bad idea to get a pre made and not build since you are on such a tight budget and if you dont want a $600 toaster in a pc case :p
You can get a decent gaming rig for this price but i may be able to move some things around for a decent editing system ask me if you want a build ;)
